Health Project MMU Kalpetta
Karuna Trust initiated the Mobile Medical Unit (MMU) project in Wayanad district, Kerala to provide comprehensive primary healthcare services to tribal and rural communities residing in remote and underserved areas.
In addressing the healthcare challenges faced by tribal populations, Mobile Medical Units (MMUs) represent a critical innovation. These units are instrumental in delivering essential medical services to remote and hard-to-reach areas, where healthcare infrastructure is often limited or non-existent. The primary goal of the MMUs is to bridge the healthcare gap for populations residing in remote, challenging terrains with limited access and poor health-seeking behavior.
The MMU project covered approximately 20–25 tribal habitations across 7 panchayats in Wayanad district, benefiting more than 12,000 tribal and rural beneficiaries during the reporting period.
Key Healthcare Services:
The Mobile Medical Unit provided:
- General OPD services
- Laboratory investigations
- Home visits and follow-up care
- Anaemia screening and management
- NCD identification and treatment
- School health visits and awareness activities
- Community outreach services
Major Achievements During 2025–2026
During the reporting period:
- A total of 2,898 patients availed OPD services
- 250 laboratory investigations were conducted
- 628 anaemic patients were identified and treated
- 64 home visits were carried out
- 297 NCD patients were identified and managed
- The MMU travelled 5,268 kilometres to deliver doorstep healthcare services in remote tribal areas.
